Full Description

Mission:
The ANMC Nursing Internship Program provides the clinical experience & advanced study necessary for the novice nurse to progress to competency. Growth in professional nursing practice & fostering nursing excellence will meet the healthcare needs of Alaska Natives within our statewide healthcare system.

State Wide Goal:
To improve access by the statewide Alaska Native Population to quality nursing care through development of accessible, culturally appropriate, and effective nursing internship opportunities at the Alaska Native Medical Center (ANMC).

How Do I Participate in the Internship Program?
After completing your basic education either diploma, associates or bachelors degree in nursing, you need to apply for a position at Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium (ANTHC). Once hired at the ANTHC or one of the rural tribal hospitals, you participate in the hospital orientation (See the ANTHC website for jobs and application process.). Following orientation you will join your unit. Your Nurse Manager will contact the Nursing Internship Program and register you for the next internship class. There are three classes per year. The classes usually begin in February, July, and October.

What Can I Expect?

  • Clinical Experience: Work one on one with a preceptor, gradually developing more independence in your nursing practice. You will work with your preceptor’s schedule. You will aslo meet with your preceptor and nurse educator to set goals and monitor progress. Additional optional clinical experiences may include time with the house supervisor, respiratory therapy, day surgery for IV skill practice and the operating room. Other experience is available upon request.
  • Classroom experience: The weekly class includes scheduled time for instructors from multiple disciplines to help you integrate your knowledge into practice. Class emphasis is on development of critical thinking skills, technical skills, communication, human relationships, management and leadership skills, and teaching and knowledge integration. A portion of the class time is devoted to group dicussion, reflective thinking and problem solving.
  • Journaling opportunity: You may journal to express your thoughts and questions and to promote reflection on your practice.
  • Opportunity to teach: You will lead a short class that your fellow interns can receive CE credit for!
