Ensuring that You Become a Well Rounded Nurse

There are many ways that you can ensure that you become a well-rounded nurse. The best place to start is while you are in college. Studying effectively and researching outside the scope of the text will ensure that you develop in depth book knowledge.

Studying in small increments will ensure that you absorb the information in a manner that you will not forget it in a short period of time. It is important to avoid cram sessions and learn the information in the method that is most effective for you.

Many people who are in college recommend studying in ten minute sessions with one rule. This rule is to learn one new piece of information in this ten minute time frame. After that, switch subjects and complete the objective again. This ensures that you get through all of your subjects, but you do not overwhelm yourself with one specific subject, or lose pieces of information in the process.

Your Research Papers

Your research papers should reach outside of your comfort zone. If you are not familiar with a certain aspect of nursing, you should use a research paper to your advantage, and use it as an excuse to study up on your weak points.

This is a great way to inspire yourself to think outside the box and develop solids skills throughout the field of nursing.

Ask For Help

If there is something that you do not understand, an aspect of your studies that you cannot grasp, do not be afraid to ask for help. After all, you are paying thousands of dollars for your education, you should get your money’s worth.

Sometimes, the only help you will need is a different way to phrase or look at the situation. The more you understand, the better you understand the book information, the better you will be able to perform in your clinicals and your job.

During your clinicals, do not hesitate to ask for help, or to ask others if you can help them. This is an essential part of learning that you cannot get while you are in class, and many things you will come into contact with, you will not gain from a book.

You should also let your mentor know that you are willing to participate in as many different situations as you possibly can. Not only will this get you a great letter of recommendation, but it will widen your skills as a nurse and allow you to ask more questions.

 Offer Help

Many times, offering help to those around you can lead you into a learning experience of your own. Many of your classmates learn better when they get help from other people that are struggling with the same situation. So partner up and struggle together. You will come out ahead from each other’s experiences.

Utilize Many Methods of Studying

The more methods you learn to study, the better grasp you will gain from a topic. Many students feel that they gain more information from hearing something than they do from reading it. If this is the case, do not hesitate to record your book lessons onto an audio tape or recordable CD. This will allow you to study anywhere, including in the car on the way to class.

Flash cards are also an under-utilized method of studying. Flash cards allow you to test your knowledge in a quick and easy manner. They are easy to make, either by hand, or they can be created with an online flash card generator.

Do not allow any situation to prevent you from becoming a well-rounded nurse.
