Graduate Nurse Internship Program Christus St. Catherine Hospital

Graduate Nurse Internship Program Christus St. Catherine Hospital introduces the 3-6 month Graduate Nurse Internship Program to aide new RN graduates in their transition from student nurse to practicing nurse with as little anxiety as possible. The program has been designed using an individualized development model and contains both didactic and clinical applications. Adult learning principles will guide the learning experiences for the best possible transition from student to practicing nurse. This program is a part of the regular work assignment.

Didactic

The didactic portion of the program will include the expertise of guest speakers from different specialty areas, case scenarios, and online modules from sources such as Healthstream, NursesWeek, and the Performance Based Development System computer based assessment for critical thinking skills. Some of these modules will award Continuing Education credits (CE’s) to allow the nurse intern to begin collecting the amount needed for licensing renewal.

Clinical Application

The Clinical experience will follow an individualized orientation with the assignment of a coach to each nurse intern, and clinical agendas to be completed. During the initial clinical phase of the program, the nurse intern will meet as needed with the Director and Education Director for support, and to discuss learning experiences and concerns. The Education Director will also follow up with the coaches, Unit Educators and/or Department Directors once a week to keep abreast of their concerns to help the nurse intern to succeed in his or her new career at CHRISTUS St. Catherine Hospital.

CHRISTUS St. Catherine Hospital Unit Descriptions

Below are links to unit descriptions and basic functions registered nurses carry out in the different areas of the hospital. All the nurses within CHRISTUS St. Catherine Hospital demonstrate knowledge and skill in utilizing the nursing process to document, communicate, and collaborate with other team members in providing the best care for their patients.

Medical-Surgical Unit

The Medical-Surgical unit is a 36-bed department with a variety of adult patients, including, but not limited to surgical, orthopedic, gynecological, and geriatric patients. The RN functions as the primary caregiver and team leader for her/his patient assignment, working closely with a nursing assistant to provide excellent care. This unit also includes patients monitored via telemetry. The nurse-patient ratio in this unit is 1-6.

CCU/Step-Down

The Cardiac Care unit has 9 beds. The RN in this unit cares for interventional cardiac catheterization patients, post CAB, acute MI, and stable ventilator patients. Patients with post-operative respiratory instability are also managed in this area. CCU-Stepdown nurses manage patients with heart conditions such as CHF, acute and chronic renal failure, and patients that no longer need the more intensive nursing of the ICU. The nurse to patient ratio is 1-3, or 1-4, depending on acuity of the patient population.

Telemetry

This 24-bed unit houses patients who require continuous cardiac monitoring. Some diagnoses that would necessitate this monitoring include history of cardiac arrhythmias, angina, post MI, status post diagnostic cath, Digoxin toxicity, drug overdose, etc. The nurse patient ratio in this unit is 1-5 or 1-6.

ICU

In the 13 bed Intensive Care Unit, the nurse manages a more complicated population of patients. Patients may have multiple system involvement, with cardiopulmonary, post-surgical, orthopedic, infectious diseases, wounds, neurological, and cardiac involvement. CHRISTUS St. Catherine Hospital’s thriving Heart program now necessitates the care of patients post-open heart surgery in the ICU. These patients require both advance management and advance critical thinking on the part of the nurse. Nurses in this unit have a thorough knowledge of the functions of different body systems. The nurse works with hemodynamic monitoring, ventilators, arterial lines, medication drips, balloon pumps and telemetry. The nurse to patient ratio is 1-2.

Emergency Room

The 22 bed Emergency Room treats infants, children, and adults. Some of the emergent cases that patients present will include but is not limited to: motor vehicle accidents, psychiatric concerns, heart attacks, orthopedics, overdoses, shootings, appendicitis, gallbladder disease, drug seekers, gynecological, and/or obstetrical patients. The nurses working in this unit have a broad range of knowledge, knowing how to prioritize patient care according to emergent needs.

Day Surgery /Operating Room/ Recovery Room

The RNs working in the Day surgery area are responsible for preparing patients for surgery for outpatient procedures, as well as, the holding area for inpatients having surgical procedures. Once the patient is prepared for surgery, the operating room nurse assesses and accompanies the patient to surgery. The OR RN is the patient advocate and ensures safety throughout their experience in the OR. That nurse is also responsible for the needs of the surgical technologist, anesthesiologist, surgeon and surgeon’s assistant.

Once surgery is completed, the OR nurse gives report to the Recovery room nurse who continues with the next phase in the patient’s recovery.

Birthing Center (Labor & Delivery/Nursery)

Birthing Services at CHRISTUS St. Catherine Hospital has Labor & Delivery RNs that care for patients that are 20 weeks gestation to post-partum. These nurses also care for patients with ante-partum complications, labor management, and post-partum care. They may assist with the initial assessment and care of infants if the Nursery nurse is unavailable.

The Nursery RN cares for the infants from birth to discharge. They care for preterm infants that require Level II care as well as normal newborn infants. The nursery nurse will also stabilize critically ill infants and prepare them for transfer to a Level III nursery.
