HSS Nursing Residency Programs

Career development is both the provision of educational and professional growth and the delivery of programs which can prepare a nurse to begin a career or transition their career in a new direction. This includes programs offered at HSS such as the Perioperative Nurse Residency Program.

The Residency is a focused educational program consisting of a planned sequence of classroom, laboratory, and clinical experiences for the purpose of transitioning new nurse graduates and/or experienced nurses with an interest in perioperative nursing to the practice area of the Operating Room.

This evidence-based approach to developing a highly valued, specialized workforce is mutually beneficial as it affords the employer the opportunity to develop the nurse learner consistent with the philosophy and standards of the HSS organization and Magnet Nurse culture of caring and safety.

Many people choose Hospital for Special Surgery because family members and friends have told them about our high quality healthcare in orthopedics and rheumatology. Likelihood to recommend is one of the best measures for comparing one hospital to another. At HSS, we compare ourselves to other high performing hospitals in the U.S.

Our most recent Press Ganey report shows that almost 93% of HSS inpatients are likely to recommend the hospital, a leading indicator in patient satisfaction. We are proud that we have been in the 99th percentile on that measure for 19 consecutive quarters (4 ¾ years) when benchmarked against the 184 facilities in the Press Ganey Magnet Peer Group.

“Magnet” is a national recognition of best nursing practices. Hospitals with Magnet recognition often perform better than the “average” state and national hospitals. As HSS is a Magnet hospital, we seek to compare ourselves to best performing hospitals, which is why we choose Magnet hospitals as a comparison group.

We use Press Ganey to ask each and every patient about their experience at HSS. The Hospital Consumer Assessment of Health Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) asks a sample of patients nationally about their experiences. While we think asking more patients is a better approach to getting feedback about our care, we also use feedback from the HCAHPS survey to compare our performance and look for opportunities to do better.
