Our goal of the New Graduate Nurse Residency Program is to provide the novice nurse with an opportunity to build competence and confidence, while strengthening skills as he or she transitions to the role of the professional nurse.  We provide a variety of learning experiences in a safe, hands-on, and supportive environment.

The Urban Central Region (UCR) is an exciting region to work within Intermountain Healthcare. The UCR includes Intermountain Medical Center, LDS Hospital, Alta View Hospital, TOSH and Riverton Hospital opening the Fall 2009.  Our new Level 1 Trauma Center, the Intermountain Medical Center is a state-of-the-art facility and the new flagship hospital for Intermountain Healthcare. The Urban Central Region hospitals offer a wide range of opportunities for career progression.

Program Overview

The New Graduate Nurse Residency Program is designed to complement your unit orientation, providing a comprehensive and evidence based transition. As a new graduate, you’ll be prepared to be a safe, knowledgeable, and skilled professional in the highly complex and high acuity care environment.

The program is 12-weeks long and includes the following:

Didactic Training and Practical Experience

Each week includes 3 hours of didactic training combined with 36 hours of practical training.  The RN Residency Program is designed to complement your unit orientation, providing a comprehensive and evidence-based transition. As a new graduate, you’ll be prepared to be a safe, knowledgeable, and skilled professional in the highly complex and high acuity care environment.

Under the guidance of practiced specialists, your academic education is enhanced through clinical experience. Clinical experts provide emotional support and nurture critical thinking skills, leading to competence and confidence in your new nursing practice.

Following the 12-week Residency Program, you’ll participate in regular training and support. Upon completion of the residency, the new graduate will have a broader knowledge and will display the following skills:

  • Assessment skills
  • Critical thinking
  • Time management
  • Basic nursing skills
  • Delegation
  • Communication with other disciplines

Hiring Criteria

  • Education: Must have graduated from a nursing program.
  • Licensing: Must have Utah RN license or be license eligible.*
  • Hours: Must be full-time for the twelve weeks of the residency program.  Following the residency training you may change to a part-time schedule.
  • Classes: Must attend all classes and finish all course work to complete the program.
  • Commitment: Must commit to a minimum of working 1,872 hours (one year full-time)with Intermountain Healthcare’s Urban Central Region upon completion of the residency program.

*Out-of-state new graduates must have NCLEX scheduled by the time the residency program begins.
