In October 2008 an advisory committee and curriculum development committee began the innovative development process. The program is an extension of the first distance education rural nurse residency developed in 2004 for acute care settings. Preceptors are trained in critical thinking development, education practices, role transitions and rural nursing theory. Preceptors are given recognition and support for the important position they play in developing the nurse workforce. Preceptors are provided assessment tools and strategies for developing customized learning and evaluation plans.

Idaho State University School of Nursing received federal funding from the Health Resources Services Administration in 2008 to work with partners in several states to provide rural nurses with a rural generalist residency. The telemedicine and rich media classes help new rural nurses transition from novice to proficient capabilities. The standardize content and process increases patient care quality and increases nurse confidence.
