Clinical Practice

Beginning in a new area requires establishing a baseline of knowledge – fast. Available only at The Methodist Hospital, the Nurse Residency Program has been established to assist with this transition. Through formal classroom and clinical instruction, the Residency Program focuses not only on strengthening the nurse resident’s proficiency, but, more importantly, on increasing patient safety and patient outcomes.

All new Graduate Nurses (GN) must participate in the Residency Program. And, while not required to take part in the program, experienced nurses transitioning into specialty areas are strongly encouraged to participate in the up-front classes offered during orientation.

Nurse Residencies are available in the following areas:

  • Acute Care
  • Operating Room
  • Critical Care
  • Emergency Department
  • Labor and Delivery

The program is approximately 14-16 weeks in length and usually begins within the first week of a new hire or role change. For the duration of the program, nurse residents will be paired with a formally trained primary clinical preceptor. The nurse resident and the preceptor can expect to meet on a weekly basis to ensure that milestones are met. Gradual independence will occur as the nurse resident comes to rely more on his or her own skills and knowledge and less on the experience of the preceptor.

Throughout the program, many topics will be covered in a classroom setting, including pain management, palliative care, EKG, respiratory therapy, code blue and legal issues along with several other vital subjects. Outside of the classroom, the nurse resident is enveloped in hands-on training. By actively participating in supervised clinical care, the nurse resident will encounter situations not covered in textbooks, and much of the anxiety that accompanies a new position will soon dissipate.

Leadership and Professional Development

The Methodist Hospital Nurse Residency Program (NRP) has been designed to take new nurse graduates beyond their formal education. A collaborative venture with the University Healthcare Consortium (UHC), The Methodist Hospital Nurse Residency Program focuses on offering support to new baccalaureate-educated nurses by cultivating their leadership abilities and professional development.

As the only Residency Program affiliated with the UHC in the Texas Medical Center, participation requires a one-year commitment from residents. This program is designed to transition nursing graduates from the student role to the leadership role at the bedside. The focus is on extensive development of leadership skills through analysis of evidence, in-depth applications and professional development. Throughout the year, the resident will continue to be mentored in clinical situations that have not yet been mastered by the resident.

Goals of The Methodist Hospital’s Nurse Residency Program are to:

  • Enhance feelings of competency and confidence
  • To inform residents of TMH resources
  • Help residents thrive and survive

Approximately four hours a month over the course of the first year will be dedicated toward seminars broaching subjects such as those related to leadership, patient outcomes and the professional role of a nurse. Topics may include:

  • Resource Management
  • Communication
  • Patient Safety
  • Pain Management
  • End-of-Life Care
  • Stress Management

Requirements Include:

  • Successful completion of an accredited BSN program
  • Eligible for RN licensure in Texas and GN permit
  • Cumulative GPA of 3.2 or greater
  • HESI score of 950 or greater preferred
  • Letters of recommendation preferred

Graduate Nurses will be selected year round for employment. Please search and apply to the job title — Clinical Apprentice. In addition to your online application, please attach your updated resume, with current GPA, your exit HESI scores, and specific area of interest.
