RN Internship and Critical Care Fellowship Programs

Now is the time to make some very important decisions about your future — decisions that will form a bridge from the classroom to where you want to go with your professional career.

Career Development Opportunities

The OhioHealth RN Internship and Critical Care Fellowship programs provide you with the opportunity to explore new challenges and learn new clinical skills. At OhioHealth, we believe in career development opportunities. That is why we created this pathway for new graduate RNs to gain knowledge and competence

OhioHealth offers two unique programs designed to assist the new RN in the transition from student to professional clinician. The program utilizes a level approach which provides the nurse with education based on the level of care required for patients on their assigned unit. The program incorporates a combination of classroom and hands-on experience in a state-of-the-art simulation lab.

The RN Internship program consists of:

  • Medical/Surgical Internship
  • Intermediate Internship

Series of classes offered to new graduate RNs hired to Medical/Surgical or Intermediate units – new grad is defined as someone with less than one year of experience

  • Medical/Surgical and Intermediate Internship classes offered seven times per year
  • Classes organized by body system and focus on patient assessment and management while enhancing the development of critical thinking skills
  • Content to assist in the development of skills such as organization and priority setting, professional communication and conflict management
  • Participants complete hands-on simulation sessions each week to reinforce classroom learning
  • Participants begin classes together as part of the program’s level approach
  • Medical/Surgical level classes occur over a four week period. At the end of four weeks, medical/surgical level RNs will continue their orientation on their assigned unit.
  • Intermediate level RNs complete four weeks of Medical/Surgical level classes followed by 2 weeks on their assigned units in clinical orientation. They will return for one week of intermediate level classes before returning to their assigned unit to complete clinical orientation.

Internship Requirements:

  • Critical Care Fellowship is offered twice per year in January and July, and is 21 weeks in length.
  • Participants are accepted into the program based on established requirements.
  • Critical Care Fellows attend classes with Medical/Surgical and Intermediate Internship participants for the first 4 weedks of the program. They will then complete a two-week clinical rotation on an intermediate unit.
  • After the intermediate rotation they will return for one week of class.
  • Fellows then begin three critical care clinical rotations lasting four weeks, with a week of critical care classroom sessions between each rotation.
  • Participants complete hands-on simulation sessions each classroom week to reinforce learning.
  • At the end of the program, Fellows will interview for an available position in an OhioHealth critical care unit.
