The William W. Backus Hospital Nurse Residency Program

The William W. Backus Hospital Nurse Residency Program is the only one of its kind in eastern Connecticut. It builds on previous academic knowledge of the new nurse with opportunities for deeper learning through simulation training and problem-based scenarios.

Focused, concentrated education occurs in multiple specialty areas after each participant completes the core module of the program and demonstrates skills competency.  The program is designed to allow 14 – 16 weeks of shared preceptor/ protégée patient assignments. After that point a full patient assignment is expected.

As a bonus, monthly, eight-hour educational seminars will be offered to the Nurse Resident for an additional six months.  This provides a continuation of professional development and assists in maintaining a solid network of associates for these new nurses throughout the hospital.

The Nurse Residency program is one of the several “on-boarding” techniques we use to integrate new hires into our culture of quality and safety.

The program, which helps ease the transition for new nurses coming out of school and into a fast-paced acute care setting, will support you in strengthening essential nursing skills and knowledge base required for practice in our high tech, acute care environment.

Nurse Residents will be expected to work 38 to 40 hours per week with the first five core weeks on day shift.  The remainder of the program is dependant on your shift of hire, or the availability of appropriate learning experiences.
